Don’t Make Your Pet Have To Take On An Armed Intruder!

Don’t Make Your Pet Have To Take On An Armed Intruder! During my 20 years as a home security consultant there were many times when I ran into people who would say - “why do I need a security system…I have a dog?” My answer would typically be - “a good barking dog and a security system do a great job of deterring a criminal intruder. However, is your pet really equipped to take on an armed intruder?”
There have been numerous home intrusions and home invasion robberies over the past six months in our local area and two in particular where burglars ransacked the homes and ended up shooting and killing the homeowner’s pet dogs as they left the homes. Heartless Dirtbags
!!
If you don’t want a security system because you feel pretty safe, think about your pet who is home most of the time when you aren’t - and considering putting a security system in to protect your pet.
Rocky is our pet and guardian of the house when we’re gone. It’s been a top priority to make sure that both my home and Rocky are well-protected.
Take one look at this pooch - that’s not a SMILE!!
Here is a friend’s new little puppy who will some
day be the protector of the house. It would be a serious shame if someone were to blatantly shoot a puppy as sweet as this little guy during a home invasion/intrusion!
One thing I encourage people I know who have a security system is to get into the habit of always turning it on - both when you leave for the day or go to bed at night.
A security system provides a great early alert warning. Plus when you have a barking dog chances are real good that you’ll know when something suspicious is happening around your home. If an intrusion occurs when no one is home, the police are typically notified right away and dispatched to the home.
My recommendation is to be proactive and protect your home with a good quality security system making sure your home, family, and beloved pets are well-protected 24/7. That’s total peace of mind!!

Are Your Social Media Comments Telling Online Criminals Too Much?
March 27, 2010 by admin
Filed under Home Security Headline News
Last September I did a blog on how posting your personal whereabouts on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook may be giving potential online criminals too much information.
Below is the article we posted back in September and this type of crime is continuing to happen even more today. The key is to be smart, be aware of online safety issues, and recognize who you are allowing to become your “friend.” If you’re “tweeting” and “commenting” to your friends about your whereabouts - that you are on vacation, dining out…or whatever, at least make sure your home is protected with some type of security system.
Leaving your home vulnerable and unprotected makes it easy for online criminals to do their “offline” job of burglarizing homes. There are way too many of these “criminal predators” trolling the social media sites.

Posted 09/2009 - Lets Talk Home Security
Listen Up - Could your Twitter and Facebook postings tip off home burglars to the fact that you aren’t home?
When you tweet where you are or comment on Facebook to all your friends that you’re having the best cup of coffee at Panera Bread or Starbucks, are you alerting some unscrupulous “friend” that you’re not at home and that may be the opportunity for a home break-in?
Your first inclination may be “NO WAY” - who would possibly do that? A savvy “professional” burglar that’s who. Look at the number of burglaries and home invasion robberies that have dramatically increased over the last 18 months. Anything is possible - you just need to be ahead of the game.
You see “online” child predators disguising themselves as “friends.” Who’s to say there aren’t “online” local home burglars who carry their cell phones set up with Facebook/Twitter apps so they can keep up with what their “friends” are doing 24/7.
Someone could potentially “friend” local community peeps on both Facebook and Twitter and just watch the conversations. When someone is on vacation - talking about how great the oceanview is in Florida or that they are visiting family in California, this may be a great opportunity to checkout the home to see if anyone is REALLY home. Bingo!! The home is totally empty — AND NO SECURITY SYSTEM!!
My suggestion is protect your home and family right now so you don’t have to worry what you say on Facebook, Twitter or whatever social media you use. What is holding you back? Taking action now means you’ll spend less money, get a good level of protection without breaking the bank, and have total peace of mind whether at home or away on vacation.
Checkout the great offers through ADT Security. I’ve had ADT for 23 years and it’s the best peace of mind you can have when you consider your families’ safety and your home protection.
Install your security system today and tweet all you want about the coffee at Starbucks!!

7-Year Old Boy Thwarts Home Invasion Robbery After Calling 911
March 10, 2010 by admin

Do your small children know how to call 911 in case of an emergency? Do you have a Home Security Plan that lays out protection for your home and what family members should do in case of a major emergency - like a home invasion robbery? If not, it’s a good idea to set one up especially if you have small children.
When parents educate their children - even at a young age - they will know what to do and many times can respond proactively in ways that may save lives. Watch this video and read the story of a 7-year old boy’s heroic actions that did just that.
Courtesy of MyFox8.com
A terrified 7-year-old boy begged emergency dispatchers to send police to his Southern California home where three armed robbers threatened his parents, according to a recording of the call released Tuesday.
The three men remain at large. g 7-year old who was smart enough to hide from the home intruders and call 911 when his home became the target of a violent home invasion robbery crime.
Gunmen broke into the boy’s home Tuesday morning and announced that they would take whatever they wanted, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Steve Kenny said.
The boy and his 6-year-old sister hid unnoticed in the locked bathroom while the suspects threatened his mother and father at gunpoint.
“There’s some guy who’s going to kill my mom and dad,” he said breathlessly. “Bring cops. A lot of them! … And soldiers, too.”
The suspects eventually broke into the bathroom and someone screamed. The 911 operator sounded shaken as she explained what happened to her colleagues.
Kenny said the suspects grabbed the boy and asked who he called. He responded, “911.” The gunmen fled without taking anything or injuring the family.
“If not for the brave and educated actions of the 7-year-old boy, this might have ended tragically,” said sheriff’s Capt. Pat Maxwell.
This type of crime is happening more and more all across our country. Have a plan of action and educate family members so they know what to do in case you experience a home invasion crime like this.
My recommendation is to build a solid level of security protection around your home. That means installing a home security system, solid deadbolt locks, and an early alert warning system - and that’s just for starters!!!

Knock..Knock..Who’s There? Don’t Open Your Door To Strangers!

Aggravated Robbery - The Woodlands, Texas
At approximately noon today, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Gate Hill Drive in The Woodlands, Texas from a victim who reported that he had just been robbed at his home by two individuals.
“The 24 year-old victim called 911 today around noon reporting that two black males, one of whom appeared to be dressed as a police officer, knocked on his door and when he opened it, was threaten with a gun, restrained, struck on the head with a gun and robbed. The victim reported that the suspects had stolen his car. The victim sustained only minor injuries.” To read the full story CLICK HERE.
Knock..Knock..Who’s There? Know before opening your front door or you could be inviting the criminal in!
When you have someone knocking at your front door and you aren’t expecting anyone - DON’T OPEN THE DOOR - unless you can identify the person. Use a peephole or if you have sidelights next to your door - see who is there and communicate with them without opening the door. If they state they are some type of utility person checking the gas, electric, cable, or phone, get some identification and let them know you are going to verify with their office. But do not open the door. Once the door is opened, even slightly, the intruder can push their way in and overpower the homeowner.
It’s sad but with a downward spiraling economy and more and more people out of work, the incidents of home burglaries and home invasion robberies have steadily increased across the nation. When people get desperate, they tend to resort to crime of robbery or home burglaries because of the ease with which they can operate. Many homeowners and individuals do not expect this type of situation to happen to them so they are very trusting and just open their door when someone knocks.
Many scam artists and perpetrators try to gain access into the victim’s home by using deceptive measures such as saying they are doing a “survey”, or that they have a parcel that needs to be signed for or that they need to use your phone because they ran out of gas. There are a number of reasonable sounding excuses that can be used to get someone to open the door. Once the door has been opened, the perpetrator then smashes their way into the home. Don’t be fooled by these ploys. It is time to educate yourself and protect your home and family.
Here are some suggestions on what to do when someone comes knocking at your door:
1. If you are not expecting anyone, ask who is at the door before opening the door. If you only have a peephole, make sure it has at least a 180 degree angle so you can clearly see who is at the door. Try to get a good vantage point to see who is at the door. Are they canvassing the neighborhood, how many of them are there, what is their dress, and demeanor? Trust your instincts! If it doesn’t look, feel, or seem right, call 911. Carry a wireless telephone with you when you go to the door in case you need to call and check identification or in case you need help. If you have a security system, consider having a wireless remote panic button that you can carry and press to alert the police if you feel threatened.
2. If you live alone, invest in some type of personal protection device like pepper spray or mace spray and keep near the main entry door. If someone does gain access by forcing their way in, having pepper spray to defend yourself may actually throw off the intruder enough for you to escape to a neighbor’s home to get help. Many people are investing in firearms for personal protection. Make sure you are well-trained in how to use the firearm and keep away from children.
3. Don’t think a small door chain lock is going to keep an intruder out when you open the door a few inches to talk. These guys are breaking into homes because it is a job to them. They know exactly how to force their way through a small chain lock. Once inside you may be defenseless and at their mercy. Remember- DON’T open the door unless you precisely know who is there. Better safe than sorry. Checkout the Chain Reaction security door device for a stronger, more solid level of front door protection @ www.strandna.co.uk.
4. If someone is knocking, it may be best to respond to let them know that someone is home. Some burglars will knock at the front door and if there is no answer assume no one is home and either kick the front door in or go around to the back of the house and break in.
5. If the person claims to have an emergency situation, let them know you will call 911 right away and get help. Or if they claim to be a utility person you did not request, let them know you are calling the business office to get clear, accurate identification.
6. If you live alone or are alone when the person comes to your door, you might pretend that there are other people in the house by call out someone’s name. Keep the radio or television on. And be sure to have a portable house phone or cell phone in your hand when going to the door.
7. If you see suspicious persons, activities, or vehicles in your area, don’t hesitate to call 911.
You are under no obligation to answer the door when someone knocks. If you are not expecting anyone and don’t recognize the person at the door, let them know you are not interested and to go away.
A superior solution to compliment any burglar alarm system is the “Chain Reaction DNA” protection device. You can find more information at http://www.strandna.co.uk/.

Home Security - Burglar Proofing Your Home

Courtesy of Fox 5 Atlanta
As I have mentioned so many times in my articles, the first step to protecting your home begins with installing a home security system. However, I always say don’t rely solely on the security system - build an impenetrable level of protection around your home. That means having updated, solid strong deadbolt locks, reinforced frames around the door, solid wood or metal core doors, good window locks and glass protection, an early alert warning system, and outside security lights are among some of the protection recommended. Doing something is better than doing nothing because the criminal home burglar/home invasion intruder is getting smarter and more professional as the economy continues to worsen.
By being proactive and establishing a security plan for your home and family you may eliminate your home as being a target for these criminals. If a home intruder has to work very hard to enter a home, he will typically give up and go to an easier home. Establish a home security plan that incorporates an impenetrable protection level that keeps these punks out of your home so your family stays safe!!
Here is an article by Fox 5 Atlanta about burglar proofing your home. Home intrusion criminals are getting so bold that having a security system may not be enough as they know it may take 3-5-10 minutes before police will arrive. By that time the home intruders have broken in - scooped up your high valuables and are gone before the police arrive.
Stopping these guys at the front door is definately key!! Make sure the front door, your deadbolt locks, your bolt, your reinforced frames are extremely difficult to break through so these punks decide to go someplace else. If the intruder has to put forth any effort to get into your home, he’s probably going to give up and find an easier target. That’s why you want to “target harden” your home.

The latest FBI crime numbers show a home is burglarized in the United States, once every 23 seconds. In a majority of those break-ins, the thief enters the home through the front door. According to experts there are simple ways to upgrade the security of a front door on a budget.
Home security video taken from a Metro Atlanta home shows thieves casually targeting one of the most vulnerable parts of a home.
“I didn’t realize before, how unsafe it was. Until I found out one swift kick and everything can come down,” said break-in victim Melissa Dobbins.
Dobbins was outside walking her dog, when her home was burglarized. Even though the door to Dobbins’ home was locked and the alarm set, burglars got in and stole TVs and jewelry. The burglars were gone long before police arrived.
The thieves that struck Dobbins’ home went in the through the front door.
“This entire frame broke. The door was open, I mean, it was just all gone,” said Dobbins. Read the rest of the story

Home Security-What Is Your First Line Of Defense?
January 30, 2010 by admin
Filed under Home Security Headline News
First Line Of Defense Security Strategies
Have you put up a defensive barrier around your home to keep the criminals, creeps, and home intruders out? What first line of defense strategies have you set up to keep your home and family secure and safe?
For thousands of people a home security system with warning signs in both the front and back yards plus window decals that indicate there is a security system is the first line of defense. The signs and stickers are the first thing a burglar sees from the road or as someone approaches your home. This can be your first line of defense!
One of the most prominent things that stand out about this home is the ADT alarm sign right at the front entry area. Burglars typically want to avoid a home with a sign like this. “Why jeopardize getting caught when there are much easier homes that don’t have a security system.” A random survey of this neighborhood showed there weren’t many homes with security alarm signs - which make those homes a more vulnerable home burglary target.
Again, when a burglar is randomly looking at homes to break into, one of the first things he looks for is - does the home have a security system? If you have built layers of security protection around your home that includes a security system, your alarm warning sign will be your first line of defense. Of all the homes in your neighborhood your home will not be that attactive to a burglar. He will more likely move on to another home - unfortunately to one of the homes with no alarm yard sign!
Why Does A Burglar Look For Homes With No Security Signs?
Why you might ask? Because burglars look for crimes of opportunity. An easy home with no security system (signs/decals), perhaps a door or window left unlocked can be an extremely easy opportunity. Burglars want to be in and out of a home within 5-10 minutes or less. They know where to go once inside, what to look for, and they don’t want to spend anymore time than necessary. In and out– that’s the game! They also don’t want to make a lot of noise that will attract attention and alert the police. Setting off a security system will do just that.
You can make your home less appealing to a burglar by installing a good quality home security system. By being proactive and protecting your home you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a home burglary victim!

Home Invasion Prevention - Excerpt

HOME INVASION PREVENTION
Learn Why Home Invasion Robberies & Home Burglaries
Are Becoming More and More Prevalent In Our Society
….And What You Can Do To Avoid Being A Victim!
Ways To Avoid Becoming A Victim Of A Home Invasion Robbery
1. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. Sometimes your intuition or instincts will let you know when something isn’t right. Listen! When you are out and about be aware if someone – perhaps a stranger - seems to be watching you too closely, seems overly friendly, or way too interested in your personal affairs. Be aware of any vehicle that you feel is following you a little too closely as you drive home.
2. Install a good quality home security system with 24/7 alarm monitoring. The alarm company will immediately be alerted to any activity from your home and dispatch the police of any type of home burglary or emergency. There really is no excuse not to protect your home and family with a security system. Remember the police can’t be everywhere and the security and safety of your home and family is your responsibility. Be proactive and protect your home. This will provide tremendous peace of mind and be a huge deterrent to a potential home burglary or home invasion crime.
3. When you pull into your driveway keep your car doors locked and observe if there are strangers around as you pull into the garage. While still in your car, close the garage door and make sure it if fully closed as you exit your vehicle. It is easy to become overwhelmed with groceries, packages, and work-related items to the point we aren’t paying close attention to what is going on in and around the garage area.
4. When you are at home, be sure to keep all doors and windows locked. If a stranger comes to your door, DO NOT open your door unless you know precisely who it is. The majority of home invasion robberies happen right through the front door. A homeowner automatically opens the front door without thinking and is confronted by a violent home intruder. Make it a habit to ask who is at the front door before opening. You can always communicate through a closed door. You are under no obligation to open your door to anyone – especially strangers. Ask for identification if it is someone claiming to be from a utility or delivery service company. Carry your phone and call to confirm their identity or call 911.
5. Join or form a Neighborhood Watch Group where neighbors know each other in the immediate vicinity. Get to know the neighbors across from you. Have a form and get to know your neighbors so you can all watch out for each other. Go across the street 5 houses to the left and 5 houses to the right and do the same on your side 5-houses to the left and 5-houses to the right. Then exchange names, phone numbers, addresses, and vehicle types. Recognize any unfamiliar vehicles especially those driving slowly looking at individual homes. When you arrive home, if there is an unfamiliar vehicle parked in front of your home with people inside, you should drive on especially if you are the least bit in doubt or have a “gut feeling” that says drive on. (Form attached at the end for neighbor names/addresses).
6. Install an Early Alert Warning System for your home. The Voice Alert System will let you know when someone is on your property and within a specific radius of your home. Outdoor sensors transmit an alert warning to a voice annunciator inside your home to let you know what area of your property is being breached by potentially unwanted visitors. Would you like to know well ahead of time that someone is trying to enter your home so you have time to respond? YES should be your answer!!
7. Have a Home Security Plan of Action that states exactly what you will do to maintain the safety of your home and family. This plan should outline some specific strategies that will help to strengthen the perimeter of your home and outline things that you can do to help provide additional protection for family members if you are involved in a home invasion attack. The plan may also encourage taking a self-defense and/or personal safety awareness training class. By learning safety awareness and self-defense techniques and tactics, you will know defensive ways to protect yourself against an attacker whether at home or on the street.
8. Keep some type of personal protection like pepper spray or mace near the front door - easily within reach in case of a forced intrusion. If you have small children, keep it out of reach and away from them. Some homeowners resort to other non-lethal protection like a TASER or Stun Gun, other homeowners use lethal firearms for their family personal protection. Be sure to follow local, city, and state laws regarding this protection and always make sure you know how to properly use the personal protection you select. Keep in mind that the intruder may be armed so use your best judgment on how you will defend yourself.
9. Harden the perimeter of your home with strong doors, windows & deadbolt locks. Make sure to have solid core wood or metal doors for the main entry doors. Reinforce frames around doors that are older or outdated. Consider upgrading deadbolts and locks to ensure they can provide solid protection in case of a forced intrusion. If your door gets kicked in with the forced kick of a 250 lb intruder, you want to ensure your deadbolt lock will hold the door in place. Check our security partners at The Ultimate Lock to see how effective this locking system can be.
10. Be sure to keep trees and shrubs trimmed around your home so you don’t give home intruders an easy place to hide. Adding motion sensor lights around the home can also provide deterrent value. The best place to install motion sensor lights would be in the front, back, and garage side of the house. A suggestion would be to have the motion lights connected to a light or lamp inside the home. That way if the outdoor motion light is activated it also turns a light on inside the house. This gives the real impression to the burglar that someone may actually be at home.

Home Security - Optimum Glass Protection
January 23, 2010 by admin

Optimum Glass Protection & How To Keep Thugs From Breaking Through Sliding Glass Doors & Windows
Here’s A Typical Problem: There are many windows on your main and
lower levels that you consider to be vulnerable to a burglary. On the backside of your home there are (3) sliding glass doors that are concealed from your neighbor’s view. You have seen on the local news that burglars are easily busting through sliding glass doors when no one is home. How can you protect your sliding glass doors and windows from home intruders breaking in – whether you have a security system or not?
Solution: The standard recommendation is to install a security system and protect the glass on the doors and windows with specific sensors. If you have a security system, a glassbreak detector can sense breaking glass and sound a loud decibel alarm that will alert your alarm company to dispatch the police. Keep in mind your home location and the time it will take for the police to arrive after being dispatched. The burglar may be able to get into your home, rob you of your valuables, and be long gone before the police arrive.
Your main goal should be to keep intruders from ever getting into your home.
To make it extremely difficult for the home intruder to get through glass doors or windows, install a security window film that offers optimum glass protection making the glass virtually impenetrable. Our security resource for quality security window film is ShatterGARD.
Tips On Protecting Glass Slider Doors & Windows
- As I’ve mentioned many times, having good locks and reinforcement on the windows – such as dowel rods – can make the window extremely difficult to open. However, if the intruder is determined to break in through the glass, you need to ensure the window is unable to be broken through without setting off an alarm or making it virtually impenetrable to actually getting through.
- Contact sensors on the window or doors will set off the alarm only when the door/window is opened. Many burglars do not want to take the time to bust out the glass, clean it out and then crawl through. This is a very good protection level.
- A glassbreak detector sets off the alarm when glass is broken and is typically connected to a security alarm system. However, there are wireless glassbreak sensors that can set off an alarm locally (meaning it is not connected to a 24/7 monitoring company).
- An optimum protection for glass doors and windows is offered through ShatterGARD security window film. This company also provides security window film for your vehicle’s glass. When this window film is applied to the inside glass, it makes it virtually impenetrable to getting through. Check out the following videos that show how ShatterGARD security window film can protect both your home and your vehicle from break ins and violent carjackings.
- Don’t forget to install a home security system as your ultimate deterrence to a home burglary or home invasion robbery crime.
